Work has begun on a new walking and cycling route in Sevenoaks.
It will link Riverhead to Wildernesse and aims to ease traffic congestion and provide people with a safe place to exercise.
The two-mile route is titled ‘Sevenoaks East to West’ .
It's also hoped the route will help reduce carbon emissions in Sevenoaks.
Cllr. Irene Roy, Sevenoaks District Council’s Cabinet member for Cleaner and Greener, said: “Encouraging our residents to use safe, sustainable forms of travel is a top priority and forms part of our ambitions to tackle climate change.
“This safe and sustainable travel route should be popular with children, commuters and the wider community.”
Neil Baker, Kent County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, remarked that the route will “encourage people to choose active travel more often.”
The route will link schools such as Weald of Kent and Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys in east Sevenoaks to schools in Riverhead and Amherst in west Sevenoaks.
Other facilities the route will be close to include Sevenoaks Hospital and Sevenoaks rail station.
Existing infrastructure will be updated with footpaths widened and new route signage.
The project aims to be completed by Spring 2025 and is being funded thanks to a £1.2 million grant from the Government.
