Due to Open in 2028

Councillors have agreed on a central Tonbridge location for the replacement for the Angel Leisure Centre.

At a recent meeting, the cabinet agreed that the new Angel Centre should be built on the existing Sovereign Way Mid Car park, which is the current location of the popular monthly Farmers’ Market and is only a stone's throw away from the current Angel Centre.

The council says its preferred site should provide easy access for users, whether travelling by public transport, on foot, cycling or by car.

The project, which is the council’s biggest in over 25 years, is expected to provide a wide range of facilities including a gym, sports hall and community spaces.

The existing Angel Centre was built in 1981 and is now considered no longer fit for purpose.  The existing building will remain open until the new site is ready.

The build is expected to start in the summer of 2026, with the new Angel Centre being open to the public in the spring of 2028.

The council says it is pleased that the location means the new leisure centre can be integrated into the development plans for the whole area.

Further work has been commissioned to look into the detail and work out what facilities should be available in the new centre.

The council says it is a significant investment by the council in Tonbridge and a vote of confidence in the town.
