Clock Repaired

The historic clock chimes of St Peter's Church in Southborough are ringing out once again over the common every quarter hour.

The clock at St Peter’s has been repaired having been out of action - or only striking the hour - over the past year.

A new night silencer has been installed so the last chime of the day is at 11.00pm and the first at 7.00am.

St Peter’s is the oldest church in Southborough and was designed by Decimus Burton.

A statement from the church said: "Many thanks to all those kind friends who donated towards the cost which have covered approximately 75 percent of the cost via Just Giving and other sources.

It continued: "Anyone wishing to donate can still do so via our Just Giving page “St Peter’s Bells” . Let the bells ring out over Southborough!"

The local historical and amenity group the Southborough Society on 16th February 2025 stated: "We’re pleased announce that the Southborough Society have been able to make a contribution to the campaign to restore the historic bells of St Peter’s Church in Southborough. 🛎️

"St Peter’s Church is an iconic building in our town and now thanks to support from local groups and individuals, efforts are underway to ensure that these bells continue to ring for future generations.

"The Southborough Society’s contribution supports the campaign to help repair the frame, mechanism and install a ‘silencer’ so that the bells ring only between the hours of 7am to 11pm.

"We’re proud to be part of this vital project that preserves our rich heritage. Let’s get those bells ringing! 🔔
